Something old, something new?

May 22nd, 2009

In an effort to jumpstart something to happen with this site, I’m going to import entries from my old iWeb site. My  current thought process is that I will continue to work on the site and add some new entries.

Getting closer…

April 14th, 2009

I’m trying to organize things in my life to allow me the time to do more of what I want to do. Updating this blog is one of those things that I want to do. I had no idea how much time I squander until I started adding tasks to Things. Things is a task management application for the Mac and iPhone, but that’s not important now.

I did manage to get air in the tires and take the Corvette for a spin this evening. I can’t believe I waited this long to get the car out. I played “Close to the Edge” when I started the car and when that song was over, I played “Dance on a Volcano.” I wish I could say that fit my driving style for the evening, but I didn’t get that wild. I did manage to get close to 100 on the on ramp to I-90 and it felt damn good to do it.

Definition of Blackberry addiction

March 25th, 2009

I just left the restroom where I saw someone standing at the urinal with both hands on his Blackberry (no this isn’t a euphemism.)

I said to the man, “That could be dangerous.”

His response, “That’s why they give us these things, so we’re always working.”

“Well you have to draw the line somewhere,” I said. He stepped back, pulled his zipper up, washed his hands, and left. I should have made a joke about incorrectly drawing lines elsewhere since he had both hand on his BB… eh, never mind.

Seriously? You couldn’t wait 60 seconds until you were finished?

I’ll admit to browsing my BB or iPhone while on the can. Admit it… most of you have done something similar – even if you’re choice is a newspaper or magazine, but would you read a book or magazine at the urinal?

In this case, I’m glad this office installed little partition walls between the urinals.

One of those days…

March 25th, 2009

STRONG!Notice that the “STRONG” indicator is lit on my coffee maker? I know it is going to be one of those days. I looked at the Blackberry this morning to glance at my schedule, and I have non-stop conference calls from 8am until noon. Quick break for lunch, then more calls until 3pm. This isn’t a typical day for me at all.

Some good news… I’ve been working on a podcast called Moms Gone Geek. I’m certainly not a mom, but I cover the geek part. I started helping out with the show from a technical standpoint. I thought I was just going to help with the product of the podcast, but the current moms would have none of that. I don’t want to call myself a co-host, but I suppose I am. I must admit that I’m not 100% proud of what we’ve done so far, but I see the potential. I can already hear the difference in production quality between the early episodes that we recorded and what we’re doing now. My workflow for this podcast is set, and that was a big hurdle to get over. Head on over to the site and listen to Episode 005 to get a background of our re-launch.

Good morning?

March 24th, 2009

It is a cold, windy, and rainy morning. This does nothing to motivate me. At least it isn’t snow. As I sit in my office, I hear the sound of the rain on the roof. It puts me to sleep, so I have to have some other noise to distract me so I can get some real work done. Today has that Monday feel to it.

Hello World!

March 20th, 2009

Now look what I’ve done. I’ve blown up my blog. I’ll be poking around with Wordpress settings over the coming weeks until I feel I have something I like. If you have any suggestions for themes or must have plug-ins, please feel free to comment.

My goal is to use this site for quick posts that are too long for Twitter, post a few photos, and eventually create a personal podcast.

Macworld bound

January 5th, 2009

I’ll admit it. This was really Geri’s idea. I never thought I would be going to Macworld. We leave tomorrow afternoon for San Francisco. Geri almost seems more excited than I do at times. She wants to see “Welcome to Macintosh” again and spend some time with Rob and Josh. This is the event that spawned the idea in Geri’s head. I was lucky enough to interview the duo at the WI Film Festival in April. We’ve kept in touch since then, and they have invited us to the Macworld premier on Thursday. Travel costs were pretty good so we decided to go.

Now I get to see old friends from New Media Expo in Vegas, and meet new friends like Liana Lehua and the TUAW crew.

Geri is also armed with my 1st gen iPhone. She “allowed” me to upgrade to the iPhone 3G. Now she can’t put her iPhone down. I swear we’ll turn her into a full-fledged geek soon.

Tomorrow brings packing for the trip and some last minute items… Time for bed.

Some people’s kids… er, parents

Dad acting like a kid on the mini-golf course

Yes this is my dad back on 8-30-08 when my parents visited us in Madison. I’m surprised the spring didn’t snap.

Story songs

September 3rd, 2008

Earlier today I found a topic to get this blog back in motion – Story Songs

You can check here, here, and here for other examples. Again I got the idea from other people on Twitter.

These are not in any order nor are they necessarily my favorite story songs. These songs are just the first five that popped into my noggin when I saw the first blog entry about this topic.

Bruce Springsteen – Reno

From the album Devils and Dust, this was the first album I bought from the Boss. I know, some of you are saying I’m crazy for not at least owning a greatest hits compilation. I always appreciated his music but never felt compelled to own it. It was the sound of the title track that pushed me over the edge to buy this album.

This song grabbed me by surprise when I quickly realized the main character in the song is talking about his experience with a hooker. On the first listen, I kept getting distracted from the story by the musical arrangement, lush strings over piano and acoustic and steel guitars. I had to listen to it a few times before I could understand everything that the Boss was singing.

Phil Collins – The Roof is Leaking

From the album Face Value, I found myself singing this song over and over after getting my first CD player at about 12 or 13. Please don’t ask why. Even then I could hear the song had emotion behind the story. It has a simple melody and the arrangement builds on every verse.

Spock’s Beard – Snow

Snow isn’t a song, it is an entire double album. I can already hear you saying, “This is supposed to be about songs. Why do you keep breaking the rules?” Because it’s my blog dammit!

Snow is the story of a boy born with “skin white as lightning and eyes like two shots from a gun.” Snow also has a special gift. When Snow touches someone, he can see their pain and help them release it. He gains popularity overnight and his people build a business around his healing ability. Sounds like a mix of Powder, Tommy, and Sybok from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

What makes this album different from Tommy, rock operas, or other concept albums is the use of musical themes throughout. Tommy may have the “see me, feel me” theme appear in places, but I think Snow is in a different league. Just like Tommy, I think Snow also has some weak songs here and there, but overall it holds together more tightly than Tommy.

Yes – Circus of Heaven

From the Tormato album, tells the story of an inter-galactic circus and all of the wondrous sights and sounds. Rick Wakeman does an excellent job using the keyboards to invoke an image of a circus to add to the story. This is a song a vividly remember as a child growing up because it had the voice of a young child at the end. After Jon Anderson sings about this amazing circus, his son says, “It was ok, but there were no clows, or lions, or tigers, or bears, or candy floss…”

Sting – Fill Her Up

From the album Brand New Day. This is another song where the music itself grabbed my attention first. The song starts as twangy country and ends as a gospel romp. Tells the story of a young man working at a gas station. James Taylor plays the part of a big shot with a nice car and a good looking girl on his way to Vegas to get married. The gas station attendant is jealous of Mr. Big Shot’s situation and decides to steal the station’s cash box so he can show his girl a good time. I think you can understand where the gospel section comes in.

Dancing fool?

June 25th, 2008

I normally don’t repost stuff from the web, but I received this link from Twitter overnight from The Mac Mommy. Very interesting concept. http://www.vimeo.com/1211060?pg=embed
